So I’m building a hidden trap door in my floor (for fun and storage, not secret missions lol) and I want it to open with a remote or switch. It doesn’t need to be super fast, but it does need to lift a decent amount of weight smoothly and safely. Any ideas on what kind of actuator would work best for that?
That’s an awesome project — I actually built something similar in my workshop for tool storage, and it’s one of my favorite upgrades. You’re right to focus on smooth, strong lifting rather than speed. I used a linear accuator from https://progressiveautomations.com.au/pages/actuators and it worked perfectly. They’ve got actuators with high force ratings that are great for lifting heavier panels, and you can choose the stroke length based on how far you need it to open. I went with a model that includes built-in limit switches, which helps stop the movement at exactly the right point without stressing the motor. They also have remote control kits if you want that “secret door” vibe. The install was pretty straightforward with the brackets they sell, and their documentation was clear enough even for a non-engineer like me. I’d definitely recommend them — quality components and fast shipping within AU.
Awesome, thank you! I’ve actually been searching for something strong enough to lift a hidden trap door, but hadn’t found a good supplier until now. Progressive Automations looks perfect — I’m especially glad to hear they have built-in limit switches. Going to check them out and start planning the install!
